The Litter That Changed Everything: Parvo

When we planned this litter, we thought things would turn out very differently than they did.

While we were away dealing with family matters, Parvovirus was introduced into our home. The puppies were still too young to be fully vaccinated and protected from the disease.

What happened next was one of the hardest times our family has ever gone through.

Days turned into weeks of giving medicine, cleaning, disinfecting, going to the vet, and keeping constant watch. We worried about every puppy, celebrated every small step forward, and spent many sleepless nights hoping for better news in the morning.

Parvo is a devastating disease. Anyone who has experienced it knows how quickly a happy, healthy puppy can become critically ill.

Even though we did everything we could, we lost six puppies.

Losing them broke our hearts and remains one of the hardest things our family has faced. We loved each puppy, and every loss mattered deeply to us.

The puppies who survived showed incredible resilience. Little by little, they began eating again. Their energy returned. Tails wagged once more, and the playful personalities we loved started to shine through again.

Because their health became our highest priority, our plans changed. Rather than placing puppies into homes as originally intended, we chose to keep them with us while they recovered, matured, and continued to thrive.

Today, these dogs are healthy, active members of our family. They spend their days running beneath the citrus trees, playing together, and enjoying the simple moments that make our home special.

This experience changed us as well.

It deepened our understanding of the responsibility that comes with bringing puppies into the world and became one of the reasons we decided not to have additional litters. Instead, we chose to focus our time, energy, and resources on the dogs already entrusted to our care.

Several of these dogs have remained with us far longer than originally planned. Their rehoming fees help offset only a small portion of the veterinary care, food, vaccinations, and daily expenses invested in them over the years. More importantly, those fees help ensure each dog is thoughtfully matched with a family committed to providing a permanent home.

This chapter of our story was marked by heartbreak, resilience, and gratitude.

The six puppies we lost will never be forgotten. The dogs who survived remind us every day that healing is possible, even after profound loss. Their story has become part of Citrus Grove's story, and we are grateful for every day we share with them.

All surviving dogs have long since recovered and have gone on to live normal, active lives.
